Avoid Fashion Faux Pas in a Destination Wedding

"Fashion faux pas"Almost everyone loves a destination wedding simply because it is unique, fun and allows the couple and their guests to enjoy a different location that they have not been to. If you have been invited to a destination wedding, congratulations! It means you are important to the bride and groom. However, before you get too perked up, you might want to plan early what you are going to wear. While you might be envisioning a leisurely side trip, do not forget that you are going to attend a wedding ceremony and you do not want to dress inappropriately for the occasion. So, how do you avoid committing a fashion faux pas and turning into the center of interest in the event? Read on to find out.

The invitation is your key. Probably the best clue you can refer to in order to know the dress code for the upcoming destination wedding is the invitation. Most destination wedding invitations contain a clothing-related detail. Although they may not at all be explicit, you’ve got to be able to take the hint on the theme or warnings such as humid climate, warm temperature and the likes. If the invitation says the event is formal – white or black tie – guests are expected to go all out, but make sure not to upstage the bride or the groom. If the invitation says casual, do not leave your home with a truly casual garb. Rather, pick an outfit that looks chic and marks a daytime-appropriate outfit.

  • For the ladies. Regardless of the location of the nuptial, most ladies can get away with a dress that hits somewhere between the mid-calf or a few inches above the knee. Should the destination wedding be held in a warm-weather location, pick a dress baring the shoulders, comfortable to wear and does not need ironing. If the place has a cooler climate, you can never go wrong with a dress suit. It is a versatile option that works perfectly for a day or even on evening wedding ceremonies and will make you look polished.
  • For the gentlemen. Men always have it easy when it comes to destination wedding outfit. Unless the wedding is a strictly formal black tie affair, men can opt for the usual tailored shirt, slacks, tie and sport coat combination. If the destination wedding is going to be held in spring, a tropical location or will be held in summer by the beach, a shirt made from a lightweight cotton fabric (seersucker, madras) is a definitive option to go for. Make sure to veer away from Hawaiian-style shirts, though and leave those flip-flops behind unless otherwise specified in the invitation.

Do a little research on the destination. Although the invitation may tell you the exact location of the wedding, it pays to do your own research about it, especially in terms of weather predictions. You can never be sure if the temperature will plummet by night time, so it pays to be prepared.

Consult with the key person. If you still can’t figure out what to wear, do not hesitate to ask one of the key persons like the maid of honor or the best man. Traditionally, the maid of honor and best man assists the bride and groom respectively, so it is likely that they can provide you the right answer concerning the attire for the destination wedding. Of course, you can always directly ask the bride or the groom, but make sure that you do it ahead of time because chances are they will be busy doing the preparations.

Transport it properly. If you already have something to wear, you would want to transport your outfit properly to avoid wrinkling it and ruining your attire. Yes, you may not be the bride, but you would want to make sure that your dress or suit is polished, so place it in a suit or dress carrier.
