The idea of giving a ring as a sign of betrothal is very old one, so engagement ring is common for centuries and it  represents that the woman has been proposed and that she accepted it. And why are the most common engagement rings – diamond rings? There is a legend that Cupid’s arrows were tipped with diamonds and also the Greeks believed that the fire in the diamond represents the eternal flame of love.It is clear that since the very beginning, people tended to associate diamonds with romance and legend, but engagement diamond rings have become popular later, in the 20th century.

At the end of the 19th century several major mines from South Africa merged together and formed De Beers Consolidated Mines, Ltd. The company had a brilliant marketing plan in the late 1930s because the diamond demand and prices were on a decline. They encouraged leading fashion designers to promote diamonds rings, Hollywood stars started wearing diamonds and that way, diamonds became popular and wanted again. The slogan “A diamond is Forever” was crucial for the popularity of diamond as an unbreakable and enduring symbol of love.

Diamonds have a standardized description and their price depends on their 4 Cs- Color, Clarity, Cut and the Carat weight. Every bride-to-be always dreams about unique and beautiful engagement ring. The groom-to-be can find diamonds in many sizes and shapes (shape of pear, heart, tear drop, oval, but also some more fanciful and creative shapes) and nowadays it is even possible to get diamonds cut according to the shape of individual taste and choice, the only limit are the skill and imagination of the craftsman. It can be said that there are so many choices nowadays, that it has become extremely difficult to choose exactly the right diamond for the engagement ring. The most important thing is to listen to the heart and the choice will surely be right.
